Cayman Cycling National Team athletes Nathaniel Forbes & Victor Magalhaes once again offered up their absolute best in the 2022 Caribbean Games in Guadeloupe.
As part of the a Cayman Islands delegation to the Games, they joined Cayman track and field and swimming athletes competing against 800 other athletes from 29 countries throughout the Caribbean.
First up was the Individual Time Trial on Friday, July 1st, where Victor put in a gutsy performance. The course was an extremely technical one filled with sharp climbs, tight corners, and narrow roads that were open to traffic. Riders who started earlier in the order benefitted from drier conditions, while Victor, who was placed higher in the order due to better previous performances, battled high winds and drenching rain to finish 17th overall.
On Sunday, July 3rd, both Victor and Nathaniel took on 9 laps of the hilly 121km Road Race course. In sweltering heat approaching 100°F, our athletes held their own against some of the best in the Caribbean including pro riders and National Champions from several nations. Nathaniel faired a bit better in the increasing heat and broke away from the main group. Victor chose not to chase down his teammate, which is an amazing show of teamwork and respect. Nathaniel was sustaining 300w+ for several laps but unfortunately just could not bridge the gap to the front groups and rolled across the line in a well deserved 17th place, with Victor following behind in 26th. Our congratulations go out to both riders who earned the respect of the team and showed pride for their national colors.
Many thanks to the Cayman Islands Olympic Committee (CIOC) for their support during these truly memorable Games.
